AFM can operate in several modes, each suited for different types of measurements:
Contact Mode: The tip makes direct contact with the surface. It is useful for obtaining high-resolution images but can damage soft samples. Non-contact Mode: The tip oscillates near the surface without making contact. It is used for imaging soft or delicate samples. Tapping Mode: The tip intermittently contacts the surface, reducing lateral forces and minimizing damage to the sample.
