Mott insulators are materials that, according to conventional band theory, should conduct electricity but instead act as insulators. They arise due to strong electron-electron interactions that prohibit the free movement of electrons, a phenomenon that cannot be explained by traditional theories. The term "Mott insulator" is named after Sir Nevill Mott, who first proposed this concept.
