Cell membranes are the biological barriers that separate the interior of cells from their external environment. They are primarily composed of a phospholipid bilayer with embedded proteins, cholesterol, and carbohydrates. This complex structure allows the membrane to be both fluid and selectively permeable, regulating the movement of substances in and out of the cell.
