In classical physics, a particle needs energy equal to or greater than the barrier to cross it. In quantum mechanics, however, there is a non-zero probability that a particle can tunnel through the barrier even if its energy is less than the barrier height. This is due to the wave-like nature of particles described by the Schrödinger equation.
