STM operates by moving a sharp metallic tip close to a conductive surface. When a voltage is applied, electrons tunnel between the tip and the surface, creating a measurable current. Variations in this current are used to map the surface at atomic resolution. STM is particularly powerful because it not only images but can also manipulate individual atoms.
