The Quantum Hall Effect (QHE) requires an external magnetic field and is characterized by the quantization of the Hall conductance. In contrast, QSHE does not require an external magnetic field and arises due to intrinsic properties of the material, specifically the strong spin-orbit coupling. While QHE features edge states that carry charge, QSHE features edge states that carry spin.
