In mercury vapor lamps, an electric current passes through mercury vapor, causing it to emit light. The emitted light is primarily in the ultraviolet (UV) spectrum, which is then converted to visible light by a phosphor coating on the inside of the lamp bulb. This process is facilitated by a pair of electrodes that initiate and sustain the arc discharge.
