How Can Nanotechnology Be Made Safe and Sustainable?
Nanotechnology holds tremendous potential for sustainable development if managed responsibly. Friends of the Earth suggests the following approaches to achieve this:
Green Nanotechnology: Developing nanomaterials and processes that are environmentally benign and energy-efficient. This includes using renewable resources and designing nanomaterials that can be easily degraded or recycled. Life Cycle Assessment: Conducting comprehensive life cycle assessments (LCAs) of nanotechnology products to evaluate their environmental impacts from production to disposal. Safe Design: Incorporating safety considerations into the design phase of nanomaterials to minimize potential risks. Collaborative Research: Encouraging collaboration between scientists, industry, policymakers, and civil society to identify and address potential risks and benefits associated with nanotechnology.
