Silicon has a theoretical capacity of 4200 mAh/g, significantly higher than the 372 mAh/g of graphite. This makes it an attractive material for battery anodes. However, bulk silicon experiences substantial volumetric changes during charge-discharge cycles, leading to mechanical degradation. Nanowires can accommodate these changes better, enhancing mechanical stability.
