Peptic ulcers are open sores that develop on the inner lining of the stomach, upper small intestine, or esophagus. They are primarily caused by an infection with Helicobacter pylori bacteria and the long-term use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Symptoms include burning stomach pain, bloating, heartburn, and nausea.
