The TGA instrument consists of a thermobalance, which continuously measures the mass of a sample as it is heated or cooled. The sample is placed in a small pan that is suspended from a high-precision balance within a furnace. As the temperature changes, the instrument records the mass loss or gain, providing a thermogram that shows the relationship between mass and temperature.
