Prokaryotes can synthesize nanoparticles through both intracellular and extracellular pathways. The intracellular approach involves the uptake of metal ions which are then reduced to nanoparticles within the cell. In the extracellular method, bacteria secrete enzymes and other molecules that mediate the reduction of metal ions to metallic nanoparticles outside the cell.
