Dry adhesives often mimic the mechanisms found in nature, such as the adhesive abilities of gecko feet. Geckos can climb smooth surfaces due to the presence of millions of tiny hair-like structures called setae on their feet. These setae increase the surface area in contact with the substrate, allowing for van der Waals forces to create a strong, yet reversible, adhesive bond.
