How Do Different Organizations Define Nanotechnology?
Various organizations and regulatory bodies have proposed different definitions:
National Nanotechnology Initiative (NNI): The NNI defines nanotechnology as the understanding and control of matter at dimensions between approximately 1 and 100 nanometers, where unique phenomena enable novel applications. International Organization for Standardization (ISO): The ISO defines nanotechnology as the application of scientific knowledge to manipulate and control matter predominantly in the nanoscale (1 to 100 nm) to make use of size- and structure-dependent properties and phenomena. European Commission: The European Commission describes nanotechnology as the science and technology of materials, devices, and systems with structures and components exhibiting novel and significantly improved physical, chemical, and biological properties, phenomena, and processes due to their nanoscale size.
