In 1991, while working at the NEC Corporation, Iijima was using a high-resolution transmission electron microscope (HRTEM) to study carbon materials. During these experiments, he observed needle-like structures that were later identified as multi-walled carbon nanotubes. This discovery was published in the journal "Nature" and has since been cited thousands of times, marking a significant milestone in the history of nanotechnology.
